With so much money being spent on advertising and product placement on the shelves, it’s no wonder people flock to the major rinses found in the stores these days. Have you ever looked at the ingredients list, even without a background in science I could tell you that when I read the backs of the labels I cringe. The newest bandwagon (which I am happy about) is no alcohol. Alcohol is very drying and irritating to the tissues. Alcohol contributes to dry mouth, which can worsen bad breath and increase the growth of bacteria and germs. Diabetics, people that take blood pressure medication or antidepressants, and alcoholics are just a few of the groups of people that may want to avoid alcohol containing rinses.
Beware of Hidden Ingredients
Often other rinses that are alcohol free contain ingredients such as
- 0.07% Cetylpyridinium chloride
- poloxamer 407
- sodium saccharin
- methyl paraben
- propyl paraben
- propolyne glycol
- artificial colorings.
I can only hope that this will reach at least a few people that have similar feelings to these random ingredients. For me, I’d like to avoid most of them if possible.
I am often asked by patients which mouth rinse to use and why. Being that I am a fan of natural products I sought out one that was not filled with dyes, alcohol, harsh chemicals and preservatives. I had been looking for a product that would work well with an irrigator, and stumbled upon Dental Herb Company about 10 years ago.
Tooth and Gums Tonic
One of the many things that you may notice about the Tooth and Gums Tonic is the fresh, clean taste that lingers for quite some time. Tooth And Gums Tonic is an all natural antiseptic rinse that continues to work with both periodontal health and bad breath. There are less than 15 all natural ingredients in Tooth and Gums Tonic, and their formulas contain herbs and essential oils which have been used for centuries to maintain healthy tissue. Their products are Alcohol free, non staining, economical and concentrated. With all of their products “a little goes a long way”. The product line consists of toothpaste, mouth rinse, breath spray (convenient pocket size freshness all day long) and an irrigant that is designed to be used with an irrigation device.
Due to the company’s commitment to the dentists they serve I am not able to advertise this line on the website, however please feel free to email with product or pricing questions. Both the rinse and paste are available in travel/sample sizes as well.
